Fig Caprese with Za’atar Oil

While in the Levant you can pick the figs fresh from the tree and enjoy them straight away, in many countries you have to wait until the fruit & vegetable retailer of your choice has the delicious fruit on display. But when it is time, there is nothing else for me for a few days. And at the top of the list is Fig Caprese.

Caprese is one of my favourite Italian starters. Tomatoes, mozzarella, a little basil, olive oil and balsamic. That’s all it needs. Nevertheless there are big differences. Tomato is not the same as tomato and mozzarella is not the same as mozzarella. Especially when a recipe consists of only a few components, the quality of the ingredients is particularly important. Even if you exchange the individual ingredients – for example with figs 😉

If you would like to serve your guests a slightly different, but somehow familiar starter, then replace the tomatoes with figs. Replace basil with crunchy pistachios. And the balsamico with Za’atar oil. The result is this stunning fig Caprese with Za’atar oil.

Caprese in a different way.

Total Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 2 Servings


  • 200 g Mozzarella
  • 3 Figs
  • 1 tbsp Za’atar
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 tsp Lemon juice
  • 10 g Chopped Pistachios
  • Salt, Pepper


  • Mix olive oil with Za’atar and lemon juice and let it stand for 10 minutes.
  • Cut figs and mozzarella into slices and place them alternately on a plate.
  • Pour Za’atar oil over figs and mozzarella and season with salt and pepper.
  • Garnish with pistachios
